What's the difference between graphic design and web developing?

I need to know this because I want to persue a career in freelance web design. When finding clients, do you keep your clients permanently (if they like your work) or is it all part-time or shirt-term? Are there any people with experience who can help?

looking into that carrier and going to college for it
if you know story from friends or family about web design
